signer daemon always exits with error code

I would expect that when I do:

{quote}

(sleep 30; ods-signer stop ) &

ods-signerd -d

echo $?

{quote}

That normally I would get a "0" result, i.e. everything shut down nicely.  However I always get a "1".

In fact it always seems to partially crash.
